Terrible Days Free movie page imdb. ‘T he murder of an Israeli prime minister by an Orthodox Jew was inconceivable, ” says American-Israeli film-maker Yaron Zilberman. “For anyone who was pro-peace, it was beyond anything that we could fathom. ” The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin by the religious ultra-nationalist law student Yigal Amir, at a peace rally on 4 November 1995, was one of the most traumatic events in Israels history. Rabins death buried the prospect of peace, further divided an already riven society and left an indelible mark on Israels politics. Although the assassination has been the focus of many documentaries, Incitement is the first narrative feature to take on the subject. Directed by Zilberman and co-written with Ron Leshem ( Beaufort, Euphoria) it chronicles the events in the year preceding the assassination from Amirs point of view, and examines the political, religious and personal forces that influenced and motivated him. Extensive archival footage which is, at times, almost seamlessly intercut with reconstructed scenes, relays the progress of the Oslo accords and the violent protests against them, and gives perspective to Israeli politics and society at that time. ‘I want the audience to understand … director Yaron Zilberman. It shows that Amir, who opposed the accords, was not a loner but sought religious justification and felt emboldened by radical right-wing rabbis. But personal and psychological elements were at play too, including his narcissistic fantasies about being a religious saviour, ethnic and class discrimination, and a mother who believed he was destined for greatness. The film has not been without controversy. Following its world premiere at the Toronto film festival, Incitement won best picture at the Ophir awards – Israels Oscars – and, as a result, will now be Israels official 2020 submission to the Academy awards. In response, Israels culture minister, Miri Regev claimed that the film – which received no state funding – maligned current prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu by suggesting he played a part in the incitement, through its footage of him speaking at a right-wing rally where protesters branded Rabin a “traitor”, a “murderer” and a “Nazi” for having signed a peace agreement with the Palestinians. The accusation is not new. Netanyahu was head of the Likud party, then in opposition, and he has been repeatedly accused of stoking up hatred and ignoring the inflammatory rhetoric that characterised the political atmosphere leading up to his rival Rabins murder. Speaking on the phone from Tel Aviv, Zilberman says he had wanted to make a film about Rabins murder for more than 20 years. “For me, it has always been a big wound. But theres something about how its remembered by the nation…” he says, expressing concern that the memory, meaning and significance have somehow been lost. His hope is that Incitement will change the perception of the circumstances surrounding the events. The factors leading to the assassination were not fully investigated at the time, he says, perhaps to avoid a civil war between religious and secular Jews. Photograph: J David Ake/AFP/Getty Images Putting Amir at the centre of the narrative risks audiences feeling compassion for him but Zilberman is clear that this was not his aim. “I want the audience to understand how come a person, like Yigal Amir, became a political assassin. Yes, I let him speak but [viewers] hear all the logic, from all sides] and see that it leads to a murder. ” The film-makers say they wanted to convey the truth of what happened, to challenge the conspiracy theories that have proliferated since Rabins death. “I felt we needed to write this story as is and leave it on a history shelf because, in some parts of Israeli society, people dont believe that Amir killed Rabin. Or some believe he did, but that he was sent by the left, ” says Leshem. The film took nearly four years of rigorous research. The film-makers gained access to unpublished psychiatric evaluations of Amir, as well as interviews with the head of the security services and the police investigators, and meetings with Amirs friends, family and his wife, Larisa Trembovler, and – most remarkably – over 100 hours of telephone conversations with Amir himself, from prison. “Our goal was to get the cooperation of the family, ” says journalist Amihai Attali, one of the two researchers. As a former correspondent who had covered the West Bank and the Israeli settlements, he was well placed to approach them, he says. “But no one dreamed that I would talk to Amir personally. ” The opportunity came via Trembovler. She enabled Attali to make lengthy calls with Amir, using her home phone, two or three times a week, an hour or two at a time. “The first time I spoke to him, I didnt believe it had happened. But like anything, ” he says, “you get used to things. ” Amir is serving a life sentence and has little direct contact with anyone in prison or outside. As a result, he dived into their conversations, says Attali. “He needs to talk to someone, to tell his story and his ideas. He really thinks that he stopped the Oslo process and believes that it would never have happened without him. ” But also, by participating in the project, Amir hoped to improve his reputation. “For most people in Israel, he is the worst person in the world, and so he does whatever he can to [alter this. ” Watch a clip of Incitement. In his meetings with the family, Attali says he tried to be as non-judgmental as possible. “I didnt talk with them about whether the assassination was a good thing to have done or not. My mission was to bring the familys story, not to talk about politics. ” Attali says that their conversations did not reveal any information not already disclosed, but details did end up in the film. For example, Amir told a story about when he, his brother Haggai and a friend of theirs, Dror Adani, decided to test a rabbi, Benny Alon, to see if he would join them as their spiritual leader. Amir organised a Shabbat retreat and invited Alon and, during the synagogue service, Amir gave a Dvar Torah – a talk on a topic related to the weekly section of the Torah – in which he intimated that someone should kill Rabin, in order to see if Alons interest was piqued. In the event, Attali says, Alon did not take the bait. Yehuda Nahari Halevi gives a compelling performance as Amir, and portrays the assassins radicalisation and fanatical, delusional behaviour with chilling conviction. By coincidence, he is from Neve Amal, the same neighbourhood as Amir, and knew members of Amirs family, though not the killer himself. Like Amir, he comes from an Orthodox Yemenite family. “Because I used to be religious, I have the tools – the mannerisms, body language and the accent. It helped me a lot. But, ” he says, “its the opposite of who I am now. ” Almost 25 years have passed since the murder, yet its legacy is still fully present. “Some of the people who were shouting ‘Death to the PM are now sitting as ministers in our parliament, ” says Leshem. “You see crazy things now, ” Zilberman says, “such as Netanyahu trying to close electoral deals to get the support of the extreme religious right, who were [in 1995] at the forefront of the incitement. ” At the time of writing, the outcome of Israels recent election is yet to be decided. Credit. via Greenwich Entertainment Im not big on counterfactual historical musings. The hypothetical is tempting and tantalizing, but valueless. History happens but only just. Still, it happens. That events are not inevitable does not make them reversible. There is one exception to my impatience with historical hypotheticals. It haunts me. That is the assassination almost a quarter-century ago of Yitzhak Rabin, the Israeli prime minister who, with the weary wisdom of the warrior, sought peace with the Palestinians through the Oslo Accords. The bullets fired by Yigal Amir, a fanatical religious-nationalist Jew, on Nov. 4, 1995, killed that effort. The “peace process” became a lazy phrase devoid of meaning. In this case I find it impossible not to think, “If only. ” Rabin gritted his teeth to shake hands with Yasir Arafat, whom he cordially loathed. He spoke with a solemnity somehow accentuated by his awkwardness, in contrast to the slick sloganeering of his nemesis, Benjamin Netanyahu. Rabin looked at the sweep of history, not the latest polls. Rabin knew that there is no escaping the moral corrosion involved in subjugating another people. With Israelis and Palestinians claiming the same land, only compromise between them could bring security in the end. I was reminded of all this watching “Incitement, ” the fine new Israeli movie directed by Yaron Zilberman that takes a fresh look at the assassination, and particularly at the world of Messianic zealotry that produced and sustained and motivated Amir, a 25-year-old law student at Bar-Ilan University. He was no loner. He emerged from the significant section of Israeli society that viewed Rabin as a traitor. For Israelis convinced the West Bank is God-given real estate, Rabins preparedness for territorial compromise with the Palestinians violated Jews right to their biblical heritage. Amir believed this merited the death penalty for Rabin, whom he viewed as a “rodef, ” or pursuer, who threatened Jewish lives with his peace mongering. Amir, brilliantly played in the movie by Yehuda Nahari Halevi (who also grew up in an Orthodox Yemenite family) was successful. A two-state peace has receded, almost to vanishing point. Messianic Zionism, of Amirs variety, has gained the upper hand. Israel has drifted rightward, cheered on of late by the Trump administration. Netanyahu, now Israels longest-serving prime minister, has made it his lifes work to deny Palestinian statehood. Indicted on corruption charges against which his best defense is clinging to power, Netanyahu now advocates annexation of swathes of the West Bank. So I cant help wondering. If only Rabin had lived. If only Israel had confronted the fanatical scourge in its midst before it was too late. If only Israel had understood earlier the poison of the occupation. If only enormous security lapses had not allowed Amir to lurk for a long time close to Rabins car and fire at point-blank range. If only Shimon Peres, Rabins successor, had not proved so inept, squandering an enormous lead to allow Netanyahu to win the 1996 election. If only the honor of the warrior had not given way to the dishonor of the indicted politician. “Incitement, ” which will be released in the United States in January, is based on years of research and many conversations with Amir, who is serving a life sentence. It is most powerful in deconstructing its title. Who and what exactly incited Amir? He viewed Baruch Goldstein, the American-born killer of 29 Palestinian worshipers in Hebron in 1994, as an exemplar. He parsed religious texts and rabbis words for justification in killing Rabin as a “pursuer” or “informer” (discussion around these themes was commonplace in Israeli settlements. In short, he became convinced he was doing Gods will. As a dark-skinned Mizrahi in an Israel dominated by descendants of Ashkenazi European Jews, jilted by his pale-skinned girlfriend, feverish in his rejection of Rabins outreach to the Palestinians, Amir was susceptible to delusions of greatness under divine direction. He changed history. Another element in the incitement, however unwitting, was political. The fury of Netanyahus right wing Likud party knew no bounds. Footage shows Netanyahu speaking at a big rally on Oct. 5, 1995, a month before the assassination. As he speaks, chants rise from the crowd: “Rabin is a traitor, ” “In blood and fire we will get rid of Rabin. ” Posters were raised of Rabin in Nazi SS uniform. David Levy, a prominent member of Likud, left. Netanyahu carried on. On March 4, 1994, at an anti-Oslo protest, Netanyahu led a procession bearing a coffin with the inscription, “Rabin kills Zionism. ” Whether the coffin was for Zionism or Rabin is disputed but hardly relevant. As Zilberman, the director, wrote in an email, “A prime minister that kills Zionism is a traitor. ” That is how Amir saw Rabin: as a traitor. Netanyahu compared Rabin to Neville Chamberlain in the pages of The New York Times. After 21 Israelis and one Dutch citizen were killed in a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv on Oct. 19, 1994, he said: “Prime Minister Rabin chose to favor Arafat and the well-being of the people of Gaza over the security of Israeli citizens. ” This is scurrilous — and that is putting it kindly. Now, 24 years later, Netanyahu clings to power. A third Israeli election in a year is likely. The hope that Rabin brought has gone. But Israel deserves a fresh start under a new leader who can imagine the unimaginable and, through statesmanship, honor Rabins legacy at last. If only it could happen. The movie, directed by Yaron Zilberman ( “A Late Quartet”) presents a discomfortingly close-range depiction of what Yigal Amir saw and heard in the roughly two years before he assassinated Yitzhak Rabin, the prime minister, on Nov. 4, 1995. Both the subject matter and the approach are fraught with danger. Even making a movie about an assassin risks elevating him to a stomach-turning level of prominence — although given the shadow that Amir already casts over the politics of contemporary Israel, where Rabins rival Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power and the peace process that Rabin fought for has receded into the horizon, perhaps that notoriety already exists. But a film that argues that Amir (played by the extraordinary actor Yehuda Nahari Halevi) didnt act in a vacuum — that he was a burning fuse that, again and again, friends, family members and rabbis refused to put out — might also appear to be making excuses for his actions. “Incitement” makes the implicit case that such a criticism would have the issue backward: The notion that the political atmosphere and religious extremism in Israel in the 1990s incited Amir to violence is not new. And while Amir may be in prison, this tense, politically angry film suggests that Israel bypassed a reckoning with the nurturers of his fanaticism. Zilberman mitigates some of the perils of the project by subtly differentiating his movies perspective from Amirs. At a screening at the New York Jewish Film Festival earlier this month, the director said he had opted for several distancing devices — odd angles, no melody in the score — to keep viewers from getting swept up in Amirs point of view. Halevi is in virtually every scene, often in close-up or with the camera over his shoulder, and is frequently isolated within the claustrophobic, squarish frame. (The actors sly smile is chilling at the beginning and becomes more so as the movie goes on. The son of Yemeni-born parents, Amir is shown as a striving law student with a chip on his shoulder. He pursues a relationship with Nava (Daniella Kertesz) whose parents, settlers in the West Bank, would rather see her involved with someone else. (Their first scene together is a rare occasion when “Incitement” seems too on-the-nose: “Im like a laser pointer, ” he tells her. “I wonder what your next target is, ” she replies. The product of a politically divided household — his father, a Torah scribe, supports the Oslo Accords on which Rabin staked his leadership, while his mother does not — the movies Amir surrounds himself with toxic influences. Early in the film, he listens intently to a rabbi who defends Baruch Goldstein, who massacred 29 praying Muslims in Hebron in 1994. He has a crackpot dream of starting a vigilante militia that will do things the Israel Defense Forces will not, and using religious retreats to lure recruits. Those close to him ignore or dismiss as jokes his declarations that someone should kill Rabin. The most generous interpretation of the rabbis from whom he seeks religious justification for an assassination is that they see his questions as hypotheticals. Potently, “Incitement” depicts Amir as just one member of a self-reinforcing fringe. Few people he interacts with challenge his beliefs. Zilberman gives the movie an extra charge by fluidly interweaving scenes of the dramatized Amir with news clips of political speeches and rallies from the time — the sort of rallies at which posters might show Rabins face caught in cross hairs. The overall sense is that, with conditions set, incitement is an easy, even passive process — and that Amirs murder of Rabin is not only a tragedy, but also a cautionary tale. Incitement Not rated. Incitement movie trailer - video dailymotion. Like the Kennedy assassinations, the Rabin assassination is surrounded by a lot of unanswered questions. But this dramatization adheres closely to the accepted theory of Yigal Amir as lone killer. The English-language title, Incitement" unlike the Hebrew title) hints at the tirelessly repeated accusations that the political right in general, and Bibi Netanyahu in particular, stirred up the deadly animus against Rabin. However, the movie makes a point of accurately showing a couple of incidents that the accusations commonly distort. It shows that a particularly nasty poster of Rabin (dressing him in an SS uniform) was distributed by agent provocateur Avishai Raviv and wasn't really a poster at all but a handbill; and it shows that a coffin carried in an anti-Oslo demonstration was not a symbol threatening Rabin with death but a symbol lamenting the supposed death of Zionism. Where the depiction does go overboard, I'd say, is in emphasizing the tacit support by the religious establishment for an attack on Rabin. Bar-Ilan University, which has a Jewish religious atmosphere but also has secular Jewish students and even Arab students, is portrayed as entirely religious and plastered with anti-Rabin posters on every wall. Rabbis are shown one after another stopping short of disapproval with respect to Amir's intention to kill Rabin.
Despite not spending important time bashing Bibi, the movie does bother at the end to grumble that when he took office, his inaugural speech didn't mention Rabin.
But how is the movie as a movie? you ask. Apart from stating its point of view on the murder (and being released in Israel half a week before an election) it doesn't seem to have much of a message. As an exercise in recreating episodes that are only 25 years old and well remembered from the news, it works well. It blends recreations with authentic footage elegantly. The filmmakers did not employ well-known actors who would have made disbelief difficult to suspend, but the actors handle their parts well. The music is spare and appropriately ominous. But if the movie breaks forth from its narrow focus to imply any larger statement about the human condition, I missed it.

While the unfinished, unpatched VFX of Tom Hooper's unforgettable take on Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical somehow got shortlisted for the Oscars (YOU COULD SEE JUDI DENCH'S FREAKING WEDDING RING, AND THEY STILL PUT IT BEFORE AD ASTRA, WTF) a different fate happened to "Beautiful Ghosts" ALW and Taylor Swift's original song written almost exclusively for awards. It's very likely that this movie doesn't get nominated at all, to which I say that we drown our sorrows with a glass of MIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLKKKKKKK. -Dark Waters: What happens when a muted, dark movie by Todd Haynes crashes at the last minute in a rushed award season after skipping every single festival? A failed wide expansion at the box office and zero award precedents. Better luck next time, Mark Ruffalo. -Dolemite Is My Name: Eddie Murphy still holds on to the Best Actor race, and he still has a shot, as you could check with his nominations for both the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes. While he didn't get to the SAGs, he still got a great campaigning spot when he showed up to host the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live, which, if you haven't seen it, also was the best SNL episode in years. Even if he doesn't get nominated for an Oscar, you can be sure that he will win an Emmy next year, because he was so unbelievably funny again. -Ford v Ferrari: James Mangold's ultimate dad movie is making a place for itself in the awards season because of two factors. One is obviously the technical side, which comes in handy into the narrative of the throwback to the adult dramas about manly men who beat the odds and built a future. On the other hand, Christian Bale has been surprisingly planting a flag all over the Best Actor precursors, showing up in both the Golden Globes and the SAGs. People like to nominate Bale when he shifts from chubby to skinny, it's a fact. Let's see if this leads him and the movie towards Oscar night. -Harriet: Cynthia Erivo has been hitting every necessary step, with nominations for Best Actress in the Critics Choice, the Golden Globes and the SAGs. But her status could be in danger, because of another black actress on the rise (yes, I know, it's fucked up that we already know that two black actresses won't get in the same category. Even then, if she doesn't get Best Actress, she still has a shot for Best Original Song, because "Stand Up" the track that she co-wrote for the Kasi Lemmons biopic, has been shortlisted for that category. -Honey Boy: The Shia LaBeouf comeback has to keep building itself, because this movie has been ignored by the big awards, and also the audience. Kudos to Alma Har'el for calling out the industry's bullshit towards female-directed movies during award season, though. -Hustlers: Speaking of, Lorene Scafaria's stripper caper hasn't been recognized so far outside of Jennifer Lopez's supporting performance, which by this point is guaranteed to get nominated for an Oscar. At least this movie has the luxury of a long life thanks to its big box office success and the rewards of time. -Jojo Rabbit: While Taika Waititi's WW2 dramedy didn't make a big splash with critics or audiences, the industry has been kind to Jojo, with Best Picture nominations in the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes, as well as a Best Ensemble nod at the SAGs (which is their equivalent to BP. Another funny thing that happened with the SAG nominations is that Scarlett Johansson got an unexpected second nomination thanks to her supporting turn in this movie, which could also repeat itself during the Oscars. If we add up Adapted Screenplay, Johansson's possible second nod, and the below-the-line nods, we have a recipe for a Best Picture nomination. All thanks to a movie that's both edgy enough to get noticed, and safe enough to court old Academy members and apolitical people. -Joker: Todd Phillips' take on the Clown Prince of Crime is still making waves, courting Best Picture nods in the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes. Of course, Joaquin Phoenix is a lock in every Best Actor category of every award show, so now we have to wait and see if his winning streak with the industry starts to grow, because the critics had another man in mind during their awards. -Judy: We've been talking about it for months, she has been nominated for every single Best Actress prize in the horizon, and next Sunday we see if the sweep begins for Renee Zellweger. But there's also a chance that the overlong frontrunner effect takes over, and people start looking for other performances. "Yes, Renee is Judy, we know, but have you seen how Charlize becomes Megyn. seems to be the talk of the town during the last few weeks, and it doesn't help that the critics pointed towards other contender. The "person becomes another person" can be a double-edged sword. -Just Mercy: Just when we thought that this movie was out, Jamie Foxx surprises with a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the SAGs. Now it's a good time to mention the category and how, while Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Tom Hanks seem like locks, the fifth spot is an unsolved mystery. Foxx is the only shot left for Dustin Cretton's legal drama based on real events, and he's still campaigning to get in that hole. -Knives Out: It must feel good to be Rian Johnson this week. On one hand, the Star Wars sequel that backtracked and criticized most of the movie that you made is disappointing in both reviews and box office. On the other hand, your critically acclaimed original whodunnit just crossed 200 million dollars worldwide. And while Benoit Blanc keeps making bank, the movie has also been getting love from the Golden Globes, which gave it nods for Best Musical or Comedy, as well as nods for Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas. Rian Johnson's chances for a Best Original Screenplay nomination are growing, and the WGA coupled with a possible PGA nomination could even lead to a Best Picture spot at the Oscars. -Little Women: Boy, did this movies trajectory prove that nothings guaranteed in the race. Both the Globes and the SAGs ignored Greta Gerwigs adaptation of the classic novel that most people misquote thanks to Moe, and theres been some controversy that both helps and hinders the writer/director. First, people rallied around Gerwig after being snubbed everywhere outside of the Critics Choice, with the Golden Globes being rightfully questioned because of its gender bias against female-directed stories. But then, some other people questioned why, in a year with great films by Mati Diop, Lulu Wang, Celine Sciamma, Lorene Scafaria, Jennifer Kent and more, all the support went to the white NY director. While Gerwigs stock will drop if she keeps making movies starring white people (yeah, I know, that debate is for another time) she can rest behind the support of the audiences, which flocked during Christmas for a 29 million dollar opening weekend. If the movie has legs, it could have a chance for certain categories, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat. Other nods (like Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan, Best Supporting Actress for Florence Pugh, and Best Picture) are up in the air. -Marriage Story: Moving to the other half of Film Twitters favorite couple, Noah Baumbachs divorce dramedy went through all the highs and lows of being in the spotlight after being nominated for every top award and releasing on Netflix. After all the initial praise and chatter, something happened: the backlash. Faster than you could make a meme about Adam Driver punching a wall, it began. Suddenly, from one day to the other, you had Joe Schmoe commenting on a tweet of a clip of the argument scene, saying that he “could have done better acting than that unrealistic scene”, or Barry Shitpeas complaining about how the kid was annoying. We have to consider the fact that the Netflix release is a brand new world for Oscar contenders (Roma didnt suffer this, I think, because most people saw that it was a Mexican period drama in black and white and just said “pass”) as we saw a few weeks before with The Irishman. Still, Adam Driver, ScarJo and Laura Dern are locks, as well as Noahs original screenplay. But the “Is that it? ” factor could prove fatal in the next weeks. -Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Its kinda bittersweet to think that Quentin Tarantinos closest shot to the Oscar is really moving forward because it appeals to the old “power of da moviesh” crowd. Anyways, next week well see how the industry starts to reward the love letter to the ‘60s in Tinsel Town, because the coast is clear for the movie to win Best Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globes, and Leo must be already rehearsing his Best Actor speech. The SAGs also showered Leo, Brad and the ensemble with nods, so that could be a decisive step going forward if people havent forgotten about the July release. -Pain and Glory: While everybody talks about Adam Driver vs. Joaquin Phoenix, Antonio Banderas has been carefully building support for his masterful turn in Pedro Almodóvars self-reflective drama. Antonio won Best Actor with both the New York and Los Angeles critics (by the way, the only two cities with critics organizations that really have influence, because this year every freakin town in America now had a critics group trying to get attention with their announcements) and also bagged nods for the Critics Choice and the Golden Globes for Drama. While Banderas is in a quiet third place in the Best Actor race and the film is guaranteed to get into the Best International Film categories, it remains to be seen if Pedros original screenplay gets nommed. We cant look forward to the WGAs to clear this up, because this film is excluded from being nominated due to the fact that Almodóvar is also not a member (other films excluded include Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Farewell. Parasite: The Bong Hive keeps rising, and its undeniable that Bong Joon-hos class warfare satire will be a big player in the Best Picture conversation. It has dominated every Best Foreign Film, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director nomination, and the critics in both NY and LA awarded it, with LAFCA giving it Best Picture. The movie has passed the 20 million dollar benchmark in the US, which made it enter in the Top 10 of the highest grossing foreign films in the countrys history (worldwide, its about to pass 130 millions. And while some people compared it to Alfonso Cuaróns Roma to say that it would run out of fuel without Netflix money, the shock of all shocks happened when Parasite got nominated for Best Ensemble at the SAGs. To put that in context, its the second time that a foreign movie got that nomination. The previous one? Life is Beautiful, that ended up with a bunch of Oscar nods (including Best Picture) and gave Roberto Benigni a Best Actor win that we still dont know if its delightful or just plain annoying. Its clear that the average Academy member likes Parasite better than Roma, and its obvious why: its more entertaining and accessible, and while the story is rooted in Korean culture, the takedown of capitalism makes it have a global perspective about issues that affect everybody. Now, we have to see if Bong can jump over Tarantino and Scorsese in the next weeks. -Richard Jewell: Well, Clint happened. After a last minute release that had the advantage of old Academy members saving a spot for The Man With No Name, the biopic about the sad tale of the security guard falsely accused of being a bomber opened to just positive reviews, and then suffered a shockingly low opening weekend of 4. 7 million dollars, becoming the worst wide opening of Eastwoods career (and making things more painful, the movie cost 45 millions. Why did this happen? We can point fingers to the big controversy regarding Olivia Wildes portrayal of journalist Kathy Scruggs, who sadly passed away before this movie accused her of being a succubus who traded sex for false tips that ruined Jewells life. It didnt help that Olivia Wildes excuses and screenwriter Billy Rays conspiracy claims came out to clear nothing. In reality, I believe that what happened has a few more factors. First things first, this movie didnt star movie draw Clint Eastwood, it starred Paul Walter Hauser, a guy whos barely known for playing supporting dumb stooges in recent dramedies and Cobra Kai. Second of all, while Clint had success with recent real life stories like Sully (which, again, starred movie star Tom Hanks) Richard Jewell asks people to remember one of the big American news stories from… 1996. And then, finally, we can say that this movie made left-leaning people stay at home between Clints attitude and the Kathy Scruggs controversy, while right-leaning people didnt get the kick out of “owning the libs” that would have been buying tickets for this. Now, the only shot that Jewell has is a far chance for Kathy Bates to get a Best Supporting Actress nomination, but only the Golden Globes back that up. -Rocketman: We all expected the Golden Globe nominations for the Elton John biopic, Taron Egerton's performance and its original song "I'm Gonna Love Me Again" that has been shortlisted for the Oscars. But it was a pleasant surprise to see Egerton between the five people nominated for Best Actor at the SAGs, and it seems that his campaigning could pay off if he upsets Leo DiCaprio at the Globes. -The Farewell: If theres a movie that could end up with either several celebrations or absolutely nothing on Oscar nominations morning, its the Lulu Wang dramedy based on her family. While Awkwafina has been nominated for Best Actress in both the Golden Globes (which also gave a nod for Best Foreign Language Film, because of dumb rules) and the Critics Choice, the SAGs ignored her, which is concerning in a category where the only people that feel safe are white actresses. Also, Zhao Shuzhen has been ignored by most of the industry awards, so her status is also shaky. Going forward, it looks like Awkwafina has a clear win ahead of her in the Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy category in the Globes, but the HFPA could very easily go “HPFA mode” (which means, some random bullshit like giving the award to Cate Blanchett for Whered You Go, Bernadette. The Irishman: After all the memes and the debate about the length of Martin Scorseses last gangster epic, the film has established somewhat of a frontrunner status by being nominated for every single awards show and obviously winning Best Film with NYFCC. Furthermore, both Joe Pesci (a critics darling) and Al Pacino seem like locks for Best Supporting Actor, and Marty and Thelma Schoonmaker are circling the top of Best Director and Best Editing, respectively. But then, theres a question mark: Robert De Niro. Up until a few weeks ago, he seemed like a lock for Best Actor, but then he missed the Globes. And after that, he missed the SAGs. Sure, the SAGs are also awarding him with a Lifetime Achievement prize during the ceremony, so hell still campaign there, but somethings off and could cause chaos in the Best Actor category. It is what it is. -The Lighthouse: It seems more and more likely that the only Oscar nomination for Robert Eggers cabin fever nightmare will go towards Jarin Blaschskes cinematography, because Willem Dafoes “supporting” turn wasnt recognized by the Golden Globes or the SAGs. Dammit, I wanted the Dafoe streak to keep going. -The Report: Hey, Annette Bening got a Golden Globe nomination! That's likely going to be the only thing that most people remember about this movie that is waiting for you right now in Amazon, sadly. -The Two Popes: Those silly popes, theyre eatin da pizza and watching fútbol. Yes, the papal dramedy by Fernando Meirelles is out to the world on Netflix, and we see why old people like this movie. However, the industry is mixed on the awards for this flick, because only the Golden Globes showered the whole movie, with nods to the film, Jonathan Pryce, Anthony Hopkins and modern Mephisto himself, screenwriter Anthony McCarten. It remains to be seen if this tickles the old Academys taste, but its just outside of the big categories, waiting to strike. -Uncut Gems: The Sandman is back on the big screen, and hes still a draw. During the wide release of his first theatrical live action movie since Pixels (ugh) Adam Sandler helped the Safdie bros new thriller to reach an 18 million dollars 5-day opening weekend, which is a record high opening for distributor A24. Even though Sandler didnt get love from the Globes or the SAGs, he still is an underdog choice that got the support of the critics (and Critics Choice nods. Now that he has box office to back that up, he still has a small shot. Meanwhile, all of us suckers that live away from the US have to wait to January 31st, when Netflix releases this movie worldwide. -Us: The efforts by Lupita Nyong'o to position herself in the Best Actress race have been working, because her double performance in Jordan Peele's thriller have been recognized by both the critics awards (she got the Best Actress award of the NYFCC, and the runner-up spot for LAFCA) and the SAGs. She is the dark horse candidate in the category, and I'm personally rooting for her. -Waves: Trey Edward Shults' family drama got shut out of every major award this season, and it disappointed at the box office, so unless the new class in the Academy surprises us with Sterling K. Brown or Taylor Russell in the supporting categories, this is it for the A24 release. Technical(ly) contenders: Ad Astra, Avengers: Endgame, Downton Abbey, The Lighthouse. Check the pulse: Just Mercy. This had Oscar buzz: Seberg, The Laundromat, The Goldfinch, Lucy in the Sky, Motherless Brooklyn, The Aeronauts, The Report, Cats, Queen and Slim, Dark Waters, Waves, The King, Honey Boy. Closing question: Will Portrait of a Lady on Fire surprise us in the morning of Oscar nominations.

Watch full length uncut gems episodes. Uncut Gems is an endless blast to watch. This film was an endless adrenaline fueled rush, and The Safdie Brothers did a fantastic job directing. They are at their best when crafting a tension filled, fast paced thriller. Their style is very noticeable and present here. A lot of the shots are close ups and it gives off a genuinely intense feeling of claustrophobia. The editing and the intense soundtrack, along with the smooth, fluid movement of the shots complements the tone perfectly. If you haven't seen their previous film Good Time (2017) I would highly recommend it.
The story is one that is just constantly moving, progressing, and the intensity of this film gives of the feeling that everything could collapse at any given moment. Which is what makes this film such a nail biting experience.
This film is also a characters study for a main character who is irresponsible, sneaky, greedy, unethical, and just an all around scumbag. Adam Sandler fit the character very well and this is easily one of if not his best performance. He was great in Punch Drunk Love by Paul Thomas Anderson, but I honestly think he might have outdone himself with this one. Everyone knows him for all the terrible comedies that he's done over the years, but he's so much more than that, he is a fantastic actor, and can deliver amazing performances when given the right role and given the right material and director to work with.
Overall the presentation, the thoroughly entertaining story and characters make this an all around well crafted film that is one of the best of the year. Please go watch it as soon as you can.
